Sleep Apnea Treatment: Alternatives to CPAP

Treatment plans without CPAP machine side effects

How a CPAP Machine Works

If you have been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), your doctor may have recommended using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device while sleeping. This device is designed to open up the air passages while the patient is sleeping to restore proper breathing and sleep patterns. While effective, some patients experience significant CPAP machine side effects and are deemed intolerant of the device. These patients may need to seek out alternatives to using the CPAP apparatus as part of their treatment plan.

What is CPAP Intolerance?

CPAP intolerance occurs when the patient has an allergy to the materials used to make the CPAP device or find they have restricted movement while sleeping. Signs of intolerance include:

Straps and Headgear Cause Discomfort

Straps That Irritate the Skin

Poorly Fitting Masks or Leaky Masks

Leaking Masks Due to Poor Fitting

Noisy Machines That Disturb Sleep

Excessive Noise From the CPAP Machine

Claustrophobia Triggered By the Mask

Allergy to Latex Materials

Understanding CPAP Machine Side Effects

CPAP AlternativesThe original design of the CPAP machine has undergone several modifications and updates since its original launch in the 1980s. The masks have been redesigned for a better fit and can be worn for several hours each night with relatively little discomfort. However, some patients are simply more sensitive to the materials used to make the mask and find it very difficult to get a good night’s rest because of restricted movement. CPAP machine side effects can cause disrupted sleep patterns and make it difficult to get a good night’s rest night after night.

CPAP Alternatives

Talk to your doctor about alternatives to CPAP if you are CPAP intolerant. Other options include wearing an oral sleep appliance, changing sleep positions, losing weight if you are overweight or obese, and making other lifestyle changes to restore proper sleep. In some cases, a combination of therapies with an oral device can eliminate the need to use a CPAP machine altogether.
